In Assam, the final draft of the National Register of Citizens, NRC will not be published today as scheduled. Official sources in Guwahati said the document verification process under the NRC was hampered at some places due to the recent wave of floods.
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court last week, seeking more time to prepare the draft and the apex court had fixed the date of hearing on Monday. The NRC is being updated under the Supreme Court’s supervision.
Our Correspondent reports, the first draft of the NRC including the name of 1.9 crore citizens was published on the 31st of December last year. The NRC of 1951 is being updated in Assam to identify genuine citizens.
