The New Year festivals of Chaitra Sukladi, Ugadi, Gudi Padava, Cheti Chand, Navreh and Sajibu Cheiraoba are being celebrated in different parts of the country today. The day also marks the beginning of Chaitra Navratri.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M. Venkaiah Nadu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have greeted the people on the occasion.
In a message, Mr Kovind said, the festivals reflect the nation’s diversity and unity.
Mr. Naidu said, the festivals mark the beginning of the traditional new year and reflect the composite culture and rich heritage of the country.
Mr Modi also extended greetings to the people across the nation.
In Maharashtra, suburbs in Mumbai like Dombivali, Girgaon, Dadar and Thane celebrate Gudi Padwa in a unique way. People in traditional attire dance on the tunes of bands in large processions. Also, women dressed in nine-yards sarees called nauvaris ride bikes holding flags in hands.
In Uttar Pradesh, all famous temples and Shakti Peeths in the state have been beautifully decorated on the occasion of Navratri festival. people in large numbers are visiting the temples to offer special prayers.
