Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday is being celebrated as Good Governance Day across the country today. Good Governance Day was established in 2014 to honor Mr Vajpayee by fostering awareness among the people of accountability in government.
On December 23, 2014, Mr Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Following the announcement, the Modi government announced that the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister will be henceforth commemorated annually in India as Good Governance Day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has greeted former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birthday.
Mr Modi said, his phenomenal as well as visionary leadership made India more developed and further raised our prestige at the world stage. Prime Minister prayed for his good health.
UP: 93 prisoners to be freed on birthday of Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Uttar Pradesh government has decided to set 93 prisoners free on the birthday of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today. These convicts are lodged in different jails of Uttar Pradesh and their names were chosen from a list of prisoners who have completed their sentence in jail.
In an order, Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said that it has been decided to set free 93 prisoners convicted in different cases on the 93rd birthday of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Mr Kumar said, these prisoners have completed their sentence in jail but could not be released due to non-payment of fine imposed on them. He directed the prison department to ensure the fine is paid by NGOs, trusts and others, after verifying their credentials. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had represented Lucknow in the Lok Sabha five times.
