Hadiya, previously Akhila, who had converted to Islam before marrying a Muslim man Shafin Jahan, told media on Saturday in Kochi that she was never forced to convert and her decision to become a Muslim was taken on free will.
She also said that she is a Muslim and wants to live with her husband Shafin Jahan. She was on her way for Delhi, for the in-person hearing at the Supreme Court on coming Monday, in the alleged ‘love jihad’ case.
The top court had in August this year directed the National Investigation Agency to probe the controversial case of conversion and marriage of the woman.
Shafin Jahan, Hadiya’s husband, had moved to the apex court, after the Kerala High Court annulled his marriage with Hadiya, saying it was an insult to the independence of women in the country.
