Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said former President Abdulla Yameen is the most tyrannical ruler in the history of Maldives.

Speaking at a campaign event for his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), President Solih asserted that the former President is perceptibly plotting for the downfall of the nation once again and urged the island community to not give the opposition that opportunity.

He stressed that President Yameen’s government had received majority in Parliament during his tenure but acted against the legal ambit and messed with the entire system.

His comments came as Mr. Yameen got a reprieve from high court today which lifted the freeze on his bank accounts. He was arrested on money laundering charges last month but was released on Thursday.

President Solih said there have been recent reports that the opposition is trying to delay the parliamentary elections scheduled to take place on Saturday. He stated that they must not be given the opportunity this time and that the elections will proceed as initially planned by the elections commission.

MDP is contesting the elections to seek majority in parliament and is pitted against Mr. Yameen’s People’s national congress (PNC) on most of seats.
