Today is the World Radio Day that is celebrated every year on 13th of February to celebrate radio as the medium for entertainment, information and the mode for communication.This year, the theme is – Radio is You, a call for greater participation of audiences and communities in the policy and planning of radio broadcasting.

In her message, Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization-UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova said, at a time of turbulence, radio provides an enduring platform to bring communities together. She said,it is a force for human rights and dignity and a powerful enabler of solutions to the challenges all societies face.

The day was first celebrated in 2012 following its declaration by he UNESCO General Conference. It was subsequently adopted as an International Day by the United Nations General Assembly. On this day every year , UNESCO celebrates World Radio Day by planning activities with broadcasters, organizations and communities around the world.

The day provides an opportunity to honour how radio is uniquely positioned to bring communities together and promote positive dialogue for change. During the time of disaster like earthquake, radio plays and important role in disseminating information and bringing communities together.
