The United States has resumed air strikes inside Iran after a brief suspension, following Iran’s launch of ballistic missiles at a US military base in Jordan earlier this week. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), all of the incoming missiles were successfully intercepted and no casualties or damage were reported. The US military described the attack as an unexpected escalation and said the missiles had been fired directly from Iranian territory.
The strike marked Iran’s first direct ballistic missile attack on a US military installation since Washington temporarily halted its air campaign in an effort to create space for diplomatic engagement. US President Donald Trump warned Tehran that any attack on American personnel would draw a strong response, reaffirming that the United States would act decisively to protect its forces.
Separately, US and Saudi forces carried out coordinated air strikes against Iran-backed militia targets in Iraq. The Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) said at least 20 people were killed in the attacks. CENTCOM said the operation targeted weapons storage facilities and logistical infrastructure after more than 30 drones were launched over a three-day period against US troops and Saudi oil facilities.
Saudi Arabia also reported intercepting multiple drones aimed at oil installations in its Eastern Province, blaming Iran-backed armed groups operating in Iraq for the attempted attacks.
The latest military exchanges have significantly heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, even as indirect diplomatic contacts continue through regional mediators.
The United States had paused its air campaign last week to evaluate the security situation and allow diplomatic efforts to proceed. Earlier, Mr Trump had said negotiations with Iran were making progress but cautioned that military operations would resume if talks failed to produce results. The renewed strikes came shortly after Mr Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, where the two leaders reviewed the evolving security situation involving Iran.
