The United Nations (UN) has reaffirmed its backing for Bangladesh’s general election scheduled in February, calling it vital for the country’s democratic transition.

“The UN fully supports the February general election. It is crucial for the country’s democratic transition,” UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis said during a meeting with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday.

According to the CA’s Press Wing, the discussion touched on development priorities, reforms, and UN assistance in ensuring a transparent, free, fair and peaceful poll. Both sides also reviewed preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly and a Rohingya conference later this month.

Yunus and Lewis voiced concern over falling international funding for Rohingya humanitarian efforts, which is already hitting critical services such as education in camps. Yunus urged sustained global solidarity to bridge the shortfall, while Lewis reiterated the UN’s “steadfast support for Bangladesh’s reform and transition process” and commitment to long-term prosperity and sustainable development.
