Cautioning against the externally-imposed prescriptions, India has called for closely aligning United Nations’s operational activities with the national development plans. Counsellor in the Indian Mission to the UN Amit Narang said, as the world shifts from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda presents a meta-template for development. The SDG Agenda has tangible implications for the delivery of developmental interventions by the UN System, he said.

Speaking at a Session of the Economic and Social Council ECOSOC in New York,Mr. Narang also emphasised that unrelenting focus on poverty eradication should remain at the core of UN’s operational activities. He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at ECOSOC recently in which he had said that eradication of poverty remains the greatest unfinished business of the 20th century.
