Bangladesh’s Detective Branch (DB) police have arrested two retired army officers in Dhaka over alleged links with the activities-banned Awami League and suspected involvement in efforts to destabilise the country.
The arrested officers were identified as Lieutenant (retired) Kazi Gulshan Ara and Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Debashish Kumar Barua. They were detained during separate operations in the capital on Sunday night (October 11).
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) additional commissioner (Detective Branch) Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrests on Monday.
“They are accused in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Cyber Security Act. They have been arrested in connection with this case. The matter is under investigation. They will be interrogated,” he told journalists.

According to DB sources, Gulshan Ara was arrested first, followed by Debashish over allegations of association with her and suspected links with the Awami League.
DMP deputy commissioner (media) Aktar Hossain said the two were accused of producing and circulating anti-government content on online platforms and maintaining contact with leaders and activists of the banned organisation in an alleged attempt to create instability.
He said two cases under the Anti-Terrorism Act and the Cyber Security Act were being processed at Pallabi police station. Police have not disclosed specific evidence supporting the allegations, and investigations are continuing.
