US President Donald Trump has offered temporary protection for people illegally brought to the country as children in exchange for 5.7 billion dollars for constructing a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Trump, in a White House speech, said he is trying to break the logjam, referring to the partial government shutdown in United States which enters its 29th day today.

He said that he is proposing three years of legislative relief for 7,00,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients brought here unlawfully by their parents at a young age many years ago.

He added that this extension will give them access to work permits, social security numbers and protection from deportation.

The deal, however, has been dismissed by the Democrats as a non-starter. A statement by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump’s proposal is a compilation of several previously rejected initiatives.
