Economist Debapriya Bhattacharya has slammed Bangladesh’s new Human Rights Commission as “toothless.”
At a dialogue in Dhaka, he said, “We have been presented with a commission with no competence or efficiency. You cannot appoint a spineless ‘good person’ to head it. Honest, principled, courageous people are needed.”
Iftekharuzzaman of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury, lawyer Sara Hossain and rights activist Rani Yan Yan were among others who spoke, urging reforms.
