In a significant political development, TMC Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha Abhishek Banerjee has moved the Supreme Court against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging inaction over the party’s action against 20 rebel TMC MPs.
The petition, registered on Monday as W.P.(C) No. 1033/2026, names the Lok Sabha Speaker and Secretary General as respondents, along with the 20 MPs.
The move brings the simmering dispute within the TMC’s parliamentary group into the Supreme Court, with Banerjee challenging what he describes as the Speaker’s indecision in acting against the rebel MPs.
The Supreme Court petition comes after a nearly two-month-long effort by TMC Leader of the House in the Lok Sabha Abhishek Banerjee to seek action against 20 rebel TMC MPs. Banerjee first met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on June 19 and raised the issue. With no decision forthcoming, he followed it up with a reminder letter on July 27. Banerjee met Birla again on August 12, reiterating the demand for action.
With the issue still unresolved, Banerjee approached the Supreme Court. The petition, filed on August 7 and registered on August 17 as W.P.(C) No. 1033/2026, names the Lok Sabha Speaker and Secretary General as respondents, along with the 20 TMC MPs.
The sequence of two meetings, a written reminder and finally the Supreme Court petition marks a significant escalation in the TMC’s confrontation with its rebel MPs and the Lok Sabha Speaker.
