India’s Sumit Nagal exited the US Open after suffering defeat at the hands of World Number three Dominic Thiem. The world number 122, Nagal lost to second seed Austrian, in straight sets 3-6 3-6 2-6 in the second round.

Nagal came into the match after defeating Bradley Klahn of USA 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round. With the win, the 23-year-old became the first Indian to win a singles main draw match at a Grand Slam in the last seven years.

In Men’s Singles, third seed Daniil Medvedev cruised into the third round after defeating Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. On the women’s side, American Serena Williams advanced to the third round after sealing an easy victory against Russia’s Margarita Gasparyan. In another match, the tenth seed Garbine Muguruza from Spain suffered a 5-7, 3-6 loss to Tsvetana Pironkova.
