ISTANBUL
The pro-opposition Syrian High Negotiations Committee (HNC) said in a statement on Friday that the Free Syrian Army and other armed opposition groups have agreed to comply with the cessation of hostilities deal that is set to go into effect at midnight.
The HNC’s announcement represents 97 opposition factions in Syria.
Earlier this week, Washington and Moscow announced a cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria. It is hoped that the deal will allow aid to be delivered to desperate civilians in the war-torn country.
Daesh and al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, the Nusra Front, are excluded from the agreement.
Syria has remained locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011, when the regime of Bashar al-Assad cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.
Since then, more than 250,000 people have been killed across the country and at least 10 million have been displaced, according to UN figures.
