The Supreme Court has agreed to hear on Monday a plea of Major Aditya Kumar’s father praying that the FIR against his son lodged by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the recent Shopian firing incident, be quashed.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud on Friday had decided to hear the plea on an urgent basis.

The Jammu and Kashmir police lodged the FIR against personnel of 10 Garhwal Rifles, including Major Aditya Kumar bringing charges of murder and attempt to murder against them.

Three civilians were killed in the incident when Army personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob in Ganovpora village in Shopian on January 27. Later Chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti ordered an inquiry into the incident.

Major Aditya Kumar’s father Lieutenant Colonel Karamveer Singh has sought directions from the court for guidelines to protect the rights of soldiers.

He has also asked for adequate compensation so that no Army personnel is harassed by initiation of criminal roceedings for bonafide actions in exercise of their duties.
