Amidst high drama, Shiv Sena’s Dr. Neelam Gorhe was elected unopposed as the deputy chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council today. The Opposition BJP had moved the Bombay High Court to cancel the election stating many of its legislators have tested Covid positive and so they cannot attend the House proceedings.
However, Chairman, Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar did not accept the demand and went ahead with the House proceedings to conduct the election.
Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council, Praveen Darekar demanded Chairperson Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar to cancel the election to the post of deputy chairperson. He said that the election can be conducted after the High Court ruling on the matter which will be heard on 10th of this month.
However, the chairperson said that he would not change his decision and would go ahead with holding the election. Nimbalkar told the Leader of the Opposition that the high court has not summoned him and that he cannot accept the demand of the Opposition party. Protesting the ruling by chairperson Nimbalkar, the BJP legislators staged a walkout.
While In legislative assembly, Shiv Sena’s Pratap Sarnaik today moved the breach of privilege motion against editor-in-chief of Republic TV Arnab Goswami for using words which are deemed inappropriate against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and NCP president Sharad Pawar. The motion was moved amidst ruckus by BJP MLAs after which the House was adjourned for 10 minutes.
