The Supreme Court today refused to stay the recent amendment in the Act made by Tamil Nadu to allow Jallikattu. However, the Apex Court slammed state government for failing to maintain law and order during the recent violent protests against the ban on bull taming sport.
The apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra was hearing all Jallikattu related matters today.
Beside permitting the Centre to withdraw its January 2016 notification that has allowed use of bulls in Jallikattu and other such events, the court also agreed to examine the new law by the Tamil Nadu government that allowed Jallikattu.
The court issued notice to the state government and sought a reply within six weeks. Centre defended the new Tamil Nadu law, saying if the law allows slaughtering of animals in the name of religion, there was nothing wrong in permitting the bull-taming sport that has been part of cultural tradition.
Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the bench that a holistic approach was needed to deal with the situation.
The Apex court also permitted animal rights bodies and individuals to amend their pending petitions to challenge the new legislation. The Tamil Nadu assembly had on January 21 unanimously passed an amendment bill for conducting the bull-taming sport without any hindrance.
