justice karnan

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain former Calcutta High Court judge C S Karnan’s plea seeking interim bail and suspension of the six-month sentence awarded to him for contempt of court.

A vacation bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud and S K Kaul said the court was duty-bound by the order of the seven-judge bench on the case and the matter should be mentioned before a bench of the Chief Justice.

It said the seven-judge bench had already passed an order. The court said only the special bench could hear the plea.

Justice Karnan was arrested last night in Coimbatore by a Kolkata Police team. The apex court had sentenced Justice Karnan to six months jail for contempt of court on 9th of last month. He was then a serving judge of the Calcutta High Court.

Karnan retired from service on 12th of this month. He became the first High Court judge to have retired as a fugitive.
