SCThe Supreme Court today asked the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government to respond on a plea seeking CBI probe into alleged killing of journalist Jagender Singh in the State. A bench of the apex court asked the Centre and others to file their response within two weeks. The bench was hearing a PIL filed by a Delhi-based journalist into the death of the scribe.

Jagender Singh was allegedly set ablaze by policemen during a raid at his house in Shahjahanpur district on 1st of this month. He died on 8th. UP Minister of State for Backward Classes Welfare Ram Murti Singh Verma and four others have been named in the FIR for their alleged complicity. While the policemen have been suspended, no action has been taken against the Minister and the others.

The Allahabad High Court had on 16th June directed the State government to file a status report within a week in the case and asked to inform it about the stage of investigation by 24th of this month. Meanwhile, Jagendra’s father and his younger son have reached Lucknow today for a meeting with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The family of Jagendra continues their dharna on eighth day today at Khutar in Shahjahanpur district, demanding arrest of minister Rammurti Verma.
