Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi today called for justice for the rape victim after meeting her family in Hathras. The Gandhis arrived in Hathras in the evening to meet the family members of the 20-year-old woman whose was allegedly raped, murder and forcible cremation has triggered widespread protests across country.
They were earlier allowed by the Uttar Pradesh government, along with three others, to proceed to Hathras. This was the Gandhis’ second attempt to meet the bereaved family. Their first attempt on Thursday ended with a scuffle with the police and brief detention. Barricades have been installed at the Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) flyway even as CrPC section 144 remains imposed in UP’s Gautam Buddh Nagar.

A petition has been moved in the Allahabad High Court seeking a stay on the NARCO test of the Dalit rape victim’s bereaved family. After police removed barricades from near their home, the 20-year-old woman’s relatives said a NARCO test should instead be done on the DM and SP “who kept lying”.
Demanding a Supreme Court-monitored probe, the family expressed doubts that it was their daughter’s body which was forcibly cremated at 3am on Thursday and demanded to know what happened to “her actual body”. The family also alleged that the SIT was “hand in glove” with the four accused who belong to the upper caste community.
