Both the Houses of Parliament today paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and all those martyrs who laid down their lives and underwent immense sufferings for the country’s freedom. Making a reference in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said 9th August marks the 74th Anniversary of the historic day on which Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement in 1942. Recalling the struggle by freedom fighters, she said the country respects their dedication and high values.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Mohammed Hamid Ansari said the call of Do or Die, given by the Father of the Nation, led to an upsurge of nationalistic sentiments and heralded the attainment of Independence.
Mr Ansari said the day is a reminder for cherishing the gift of freedom handed down by those brave men and women and reaffirm the commitment to uphold the sovereignty, integrity, unity and diversity of the country. Members in both the Houses observed silence as a mark of respect to the memory of martyrs.
