Unusual scenes were witnessed in the Supreme Court on Friday after a petitioner appearing in person claimed to be “sovereign” and attempted to “order” the bench to direct the registration of an FIR against a Lucknow police officer.
The petitioner, identified as Prabal Pratap, was challenging an order of the Allahabad High Court before a bench comprising Justices K.V. Vishwanathan and Alok Aradhe.
During the hearing, Pratap addressed the judges as “judicial servants” and said, “Mister judicial servant, I order you to order the registration of an FIR against ACP Vikas Nagar, Lucknow.” The remarks, captured in a video that later circulated widely on social media, prompted Justice Vishwanathan to ask, “You are ordering us?” To this, the petitioner replied, “I am sovereign.”
The courtroom atmosphere turned more chaotic when the petitioner allegedly threw what appeared to be case papers into the air and used abusive language while being escorted out by court officials. He was also heard saying, “Ye de dena CJI ko” (“Give this to the Chief Justice of India”), before being removed from the courtroom.
Despite the disruption, the bench proceeded to examine the matter on its merits and declined to initiate contempt or any other action against the petitioner over his conduct.
In its order, the court observed, “We, considering the condition of the petitioner, do not propose to take any action against him.”
After examining the record, the bench found no reason to interfere with the Allahabad High Court’s order and dismissed the petition.
“The special leave petition is accordingly dismissed. All pending applications for permission to appear and argue in person and permission to file petition(s) shall also stand disposed of,” the court said.
