Two decades after winning her first Academy Award, Frances McDormand took home her second Oscar today. The 60-year-old actress claimed the Best Actress award for the movie, ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’, at the awards ceremony held at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles early this morning. McDormand had played the role of Mildred Hayes, a mother grieving the loss of her teenage daughter, in the black comedy drama.
Gary Oldman won the Oscar for the Best Actor for his work in ‘Darkest Hour’. The 59-year-old British actor, who won his maiden Oscar, portrayed the role of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the period drama. Allison Janney took home the coveted Best Supporting Actress award for ‘I, Tonya’, while Sam Rockwell won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
Guillermo del Toro’s inter-species fantasy drama “The Shape of Water” bagged the Best Picture award. The film also helped del Toro win the Best Director’s award, which was his maiden Oscar in the category. The lyrical drama, set during the Cold War period in 1962’s Baltimore, is about a mute cleaning lady’s unique bond with a humanoid amphibian, who is a classified government secret. The movie led the awards with 13 nominations.
Chilean film ‘A Fantastic Woman’ won the Oscar for the Best Foreign language film. Legendary Indian actors Shashi Kapoor and Sridevi, who passed away recently, featured in the ‘In Memoriam’ section at the awards. The segment pays tribute to artists who passed away this year.
