In Odisha, at least two persons lost their lives when a boat overturned in the Mahanadi River near Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district this afternoon. The death toll may rise as six people, including women and children, are missing. Meanwhile, rescue operations are underway to trace the missing persons.

According to reports, the boat was carrying about 50 passengers, all of whom hailed from the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. They were traveling to Kharseni, situated in the Ambabhona block of the Bargarh district in Odisha for tourism purposes.

An ex-gratia payment of 4 lakh rupees has been announced by Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik for the next of kin of each individual who perished in the accident .
