To acknowledge the human rights work done by activists around the country, human rights organisation the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO) awards a human rights activist with the annual Mukunan C. Menon award.

The award is given in memory of late Mukundan C. Menon, who was a noted journalist and human rights activist. He was the first General Secretary of the Confederation. He passed away in 2005.

This year, Prof. Kalyani has been selected for the award instituted by NCHRO. The jury was made up of Dr. J Devika (Thiruvananthapuram), Adv. Jaya Vindhyala (Hyderabad), Sri. NP Chekkutty (Kozhikode), Prof.A Marx (Chennai), Prof P. Koya (Kozhikode), Adv. Muhammad Shareef (Manjery), Adv. Ansar Indori (New Delhi), Reny Ayline (Thiruvananthapuram), and Adv MK Sharafudeen (Kozhikode).

Prof. Kalyani is ranked first among many nominations received from different parts of the country. Professor Kalyani used to teach physics at a government college in Tindivanam, Tamil Nadu, before he became a full time activist to work for the downtrodden. He is especially known for his work for the Irular community in Tamil Nadu.

The award includes a cash prize be of Rs. 25000/- and a citation. This is a token of our support to the Irular community in Tamil Nadu.
