Train movement has been affected following the derailment of the engine and 5 coaches of Sifung passenger train between Salakati and Basugaon in Assam this morning near the approach of a bridge. PRO of the North East Frontier railway Jayanta Sarma said that portion of a bridge was damaged due to the accident. The engine of the train fell into river because of the accident. He said that the driver of the train suffered serious injuries while a few passengers have also been injured. The passenger train runs between Alipurdwar and Guwahati.
Rescue and relief teams have arrived in the spot. Senior railway officials are also in the spot to access the situation.
Kokrajhar SP said that the derailment occurred as a tree fell on the track near Champa Bridge. The North East Frontier railways is using a nearby track to run long distance trains.
