Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has said that making law against marital rape may not be an effective solution to curb the menace. In an interview to All India Radio, minister said that the real issue was that the victims usually don’t come out and complain.
She sid that even though a law can be made against the menace, it would still be futile in the absence of complaints from the victims of such a crime.
On Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme, the Minister said that the scheme was successful in improving child sex ratio in the targeted areas particularly in Haryana. She said, sex ratio for girl has risen from 830 to 907 per thousand male child in the state.
On the women empowerment front,the minister said a massive exercise was going on to train over 200,000 sarpanches across the country in a phased manner. She said her ministry has started a programme called ‘Step’ to give money to train 200 women at a time and to get them jobs, whether at home or outside.
Ms. Gandhi added that for the first time the government has started ë-Mahila site where women can sell their products online.
