Kerala has become the first State in India to attain complete primary education.  Vice-President Dr. M .Hamid Ansari formally declare Kerala as the first State to achieve total primary education in Thiruvananthapuram today.

To rise to the level of the first Indian State to achieve cent per cent primary education is a historic moment for Kerala, For this credit goes to sustained efforts by the State Literacy Mission. Earlier  Kerala was declared the first fully literate State in the country in April 1991.

Over two lakh adult learners qualified in the public examination held by the Literacy Mission last year as part of its continuing education programme Athulyam. Payyannur Municipality in Kannur district and Nilambur Grama Panchayat in Malappuram district were the first local bodies to attain total primary education in 2007 and 2009 respectively. In September 2010 Kannuar district achieved complete primary education followed by Kasaragod district.
