Indian benchmark indices reversed early morning gains on Monday, finishing lower as a wave of profit booking swept across major sectors. The Nifty 50 surrendered its intraday high of 24,120, slipping below the psychological 23,950 mark, heavily weighed down by sharp corrections in automotive and information technology heavyweights.
The S&P BSE Sensex closed lower by 372.10 points, or 0.48%, at 76,728.37. The broader Nifty 50 index fell 109.75 points, or 0.46%, to settle at 23,946.25.
Market anxiety was visible in the NSE’s India VIX—often referred to as the market’s fear gauge—which spiked 4.29% to sit at 13.61. The overall market breadth remained distinctly bearish. On the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), 1,712 shares advanced against ,2629 that declined, while 232 scrips closed unchanged.

Heavyweights Drag Indices Lower
The index correction was led by Kotak Mahindra Bank, which tumbled 2.93% following the announcement that Managing Director and CEO Ashok Vaswani will step down at the end of his term on December 31, 2026.
Other key index laggards included automotive giant Mahindra & Mahindra, down 2.43%, and oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries, which shed 1.20%. Broad-market indices mirrored the headline benchmarks, with the BSE 150 MidCap index losing 0.22% and the BSE 250 SmallCap index declining 0.57%.
Geopolitical Friction Clouds Global Markets
Domestic sentiment was further dampened by geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East. Over the weekend, the United States executed airstrikes against Iranian military installations near the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump warned via Truth Social that American aircraft targeted missile, drone storage facilities, and coastal radars after Iran allegedly breached a standing ceasefire agreement.
While US Dow Jones futures pointed to a positive opening on Wall Street (up 202 points), European and Asian bourses closed mixed. Investors remain deeply concerned over potential retaliatory responses and the long-term stability of global crude supply lines. Additionally, US markets closed mixed last Friday, with tech stocks taking a substantial hit—the Nasdaq fell 4.6% across the week amid reports that OpenAI may delay its highly anticipated IPO to 2027 due to volatile capital markets and softer listings like SpaceX.
Corporate Action & Stocks in Spotlight
Persistent Systems Hit by €1.1B Nagarro Takeover Ambitions
Shares of Persistent Systems plummeted 11.35% following its announcement of an all-cash, voluntary public takeover offer for Munich-based digital engineering firm Nagarro SE at €81 per share.
While the merger envisions a global digital powerhouse with a $2.9 billion annual revenue run-rate and a 46,000-strong workforce across 40 countries, the sheer size of the cross-border acquisition triggered execution anxiety among institutional investors. Persistent has already locked in a 21% stake from Nagarro’s largest blockholder, aiming for a minimum threshold of 50% plus one share.

Forex Reserves Provide Macro Cushion
On the macroeconomic front, India’s external position showed resilience. The Reserve Bank of India reported that forex reserves rose by $963 million to reach $672.587 billion for the week ended June 19.
The increase was entirely powered by a massive $4.110 billion appreciation in the valuation of the central bank’s gold holdings, which reached $107.930 billion. This gold revaluation comfortably cushioned a $3.072 billion drawdown in foreign currency assets, which contracted to $541.217 billion during the same reporting week.
