Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that journalism has played a great role in strengthening the Indian democracy. Speaking at a function in New Delhi, Mr Modi said, during the freedom struggle, the newspapers proved to be potent weapon in fighting against British empire.He said,the colonial rulers were scared of those who wrote and expressed themselves through the newspapers.
Referring to the emergency rule in 1975, Mr Modi said, there were few in the media lke Ramnath Goenka, the founder of Indian Express group. The Prime Minister said,at present technology is a challenge to the media because the news now reaches the people just within seconds through social media.
He said, the unity of India should be the priority and with emphasis on ways to promote national integration.
Mr Modi exhorted all the institutions to work together to take the country to newer heights as government of the day alone can not do it. Earlier Mr Modi presented Ramnath Goenka Award to various journalists for excellence in journalism.
