A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) of the Indian Army died in Nowgam sector of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir,yesterday. Army said the Pakistani troops fired Sniper shots when the officer came out of his bunker yesterday afternoon. He succumbed to injuries later in hospital.

The JCO identified as Krishna Singh of 3 Kamao regiment of army was hit by a Pakistani sniper shot near the LoC in Lackmani post in Nowgam sector and later succumbed to injuries.

This is the first fatal casualty on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir due to ceasefire violations since National Security Advisor (NSA) level talks scheduled for August 23 and 24 failed to take off.

A spokesman of Army in Srinagar said the JCO was critically wounded at 1 PM when he was targeted from across the LoC. He succumbed to his injuries later. He said there was exchange of fire between the two armies after the sniper shots were fired.

Two BSF jawans were killed in the same sector on 1st June and 9th July when Pak army had targeted their posts from Leepa valley in PoK.
