The people of Tabriz in northwestern Iran gathered to hold the mourning service for the martyrs of the Iranian president's helicopter crash.

The Presidential election will be held in Iran on June 28. IRNA reported that the election date was determined in a meeting attended by Iran’s interim President Mohammad Mokhber, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, as well as Vice-President for Legal Affairs Mohammad Dehqan and representatives of the Iranian Constitutional Council and Interior Ministry.

Earlier, the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as interim president in the wake of President Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash.

According to Iran’s Constitution, the interim President is duty-bound to make arrangements for the election of a new President within a maximum of 50 days.

During the meeting, the participants also set the schedule for the 14th presidential election process, including formation of executive delegations, registration of candidates and launch of electoral campaigns.

The registration of candidates will be done between May 30 and June 3, and the election campaign period will be from June 12  to 27.

Meanwhile, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Bagheri has assigned a high-ranking delegation to investigate into the case of a helicopter crash in which President Ebrahim Raisi and his accompanying team were killed. Acting President Mohammad Mokhber has said that a funeral will be held for President Raisi in South Khorasan Province on Thursday and he will be laid to rest in his hometown Mashhad on the same day.

Raisi on Sunday (May 19, 2024) along with Hossein Amirabdollahian, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mohammad Ali Al-e Hashem, Friday prayers leader of Tabriz; Malek Rahmati Governor-General of East Azerbaijan, Mehdi Mousavi; head of the presidential protection team; and the pilots and flight crew members were martyred in a plane crash on the way back from Khoda’afarin Dam and on their way to Tabriz Oil Refinery in Varzghan District of East Azerbaijan province.

Search and rescue teams scoured the mountainous terrain in heavy fog overnight and found the wreckage early on Monday.
