India today welcomed the extradition of ULFA leader Anoop Chetia from Bangladesh. In a tweet, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, handing over of Chetia by Bangladesh shows its commitment and maturity to cooperate with India on issues like terror and organised crime. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to his Bangaldesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and thanked her for assistance in the fight against terrorism.

Chetia was handed over to the CBI late last night as per the deportation treaty. The significant development came close on the heels of deportation of Mumbai underworld gangster Chhota Rajan from Indonesia. Chetia, the founder general secretary of the banned United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), is wanted for killings, abductions, bank robberies and extortion activities. He was arrested in Dhaka in 1997. The insurgent leader was in Bangladesh ever since he fled India in early 1990s.

Meanwhile, Assam IGP Law and Order S N Singh said Anup Chetia has to face the law once he has been taken to the state. Talking to AIR, he said Chetia was chargesheeted in more than one cases. However, he made it clear that Chetia who is cousin of ULFA Independence Chief Paresh Baruah can be a part of the peace process following legal formalities. AIR correspondent reports that
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has welcomed the release of ULFA leader Anup Chetia and hoped that he will play a positive role in ongoing peace process with the Centre. Pro – Talk faction of the ULFA have also welcomed the move and hoped that his release will help the ongoing peace talk with the Centre. Anup Chetia who is cousin of ULFA Independence Chief Paresh Baruah was arrested in Dhaka in 1997. His jubilant family members said, they are eagerly waiting to meet him after 18 years.
