Bangladesh last night handed over the jailed General Secretary of banned outfit ULFA, Anup Chetia to India. He was handed over to the CBI late by the Bangladesh authority. Confirming this, Additional DGP of Assam Pallab Bhattacharya said that as per deportation treaty, the jailed ULFA leader was handed over to the premier agency.
Mr. Bhattacharya said that follow up activities are being carried out as per norms to bring him. Mr. Chetia was arrested in Dhaka in 1997.
Later Assam IGP- Law and Order S N Singh said that ULFA leader Anup Chetia has to face the law once he has been taken to the state. Talking to AIR , Mr Singh said that he was chargesheeted in more than one case.
However he made it clear that Chetia who is cousin of ULFA Independence Chief Paresh Baruah can be a part of the peace process following legal formalities. The leaders of the Pro Talk ULFA have welcomed the release of Chetia.They said that his release will help the on going peace talk with the Centre. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said that the Centre should hand over him to Assam government.
The pro-talk ULFA group led by its Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa has been demanding the release of Anup Chetia. Pro-Talk ULFA leader Pradip Gogoi said that the release of Chetia will boost the peace process. Another 2 ULFA leaders are also likely to come with Mr. Chetia. His family members at Jerai Gaon in Dibrugarh district are also eagerly waiting to meet him after a long period. On the handing over of the ULFA leader to the Assam government, state Chief Secretary V K Pepersenia told AIR that it would entirely depend on the Centre.
After years of negotiation, jailed ULFA leader Anup Chetia alias Golap Baruah has been handed over to India by Bangladesh. He was arrested in Dhaka in the year 1997 and sent to jail. The pro-talk ULFA led by its Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa was demanding the release of Anup Chetia.
Pro-talk ULFA leader Pradip Gogoi has welcomed this move and hoped that his release will boost the peace process with the Centre. His family members at Jerai Gaon in Dibrugarh are also eagerly waiting to meet Anup Chetia after a long period. On handing over of the ULFA leader to the Assam government, state Chief Secretary V K Pepersenia said, the Centre would take a decision in this regard.
