The National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Centre,Telangana Government and Hyderabad Police Commissioner over reported shortage of water, electricity,food and other facilities in the campus of Hyderabad Central University.
Taking suo-motu cognisance of media reports, the Commission issued notices to Secretary in the HRD Ministry, Telagana Chief Secretary and Police Commissioner Hyderabad calling for reports within one week.
The Commission has observed that the arbitrary act and high handedness of senior University officials as well as Police and Administrative officers, as reported in media, raise serious concerns towards safety and security of the students.
The NHRC said, no one can be deprived of the basic amenities like water, food and electricity by willful act of the State.
Media reports say, there is heavy police presence in the University Campus and students are under immense fear and trauma due to indiscriminate arrests of about 25 students and 2 faculty members on 23rd of this month in connection with incidents of vandalizing the office of the Vice Chancellor and damaging the public property.
Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission has also sought a complete report from the HCU over the incidents by tomorrow. A local court has posted the hearing on the bail pleas of the arrested students and the faculty members on March 28.
Meanwhile, the Congress and MIM parties today demanded the immediate release of arrested students. Telangana Congress president U. K. Reddy and MIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi also sought the arrest of Vice Chancellor Prof Apparao. They said, there was already a case registered against the V-C in connection with the suicide of Research Scholar Rohit Vemula.
