Heavy rains lashed Mumbai as well as its surrounding areas Friday, disrupting rail and road traffic between Pune and Mumbai. Rains washed away a section of the railway track at Kamshet near Lonavala, badly affecting Pune-bound trains, while authorities tried to maintain the Pune-Mumbai single railway line.

However, the showers were welcomed in western and central Maharashtra which face a massive rainfall deficit which has also led to a water cut in the city where reservoir levels have gone down to almost 50 per cent of its storage capacity.
