About 400 Maoist supporters have surrendered before the police in the Naxal-affected Malkangiri district of Odisha.

Those surrendered include 45 members of the left wing militia group of Materu gram panchayat under Podia block. The surrendered villagers alleged their leadership of killing innocent people and deviating from root cause of extremism.

Malkangiri district Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra told reporters that criminal cases are pending against some members of the militia group and the government would be advised to consider their cases sympathetically as per the surrender policy.
