Relief & rescue ops in full swing in Tamil Nadu as Death toll reaches to 80

The north east monsoon has been active bringing in heavy rain in many parts of Tamil Nadu. The Met office has said that there will be heavy rain in coastal Tamil Nadu and many interior districts in the state as trough of low pressure over southwest Bay of Bengal now lies over Kumari Sea.

Meanwhile,Tamil Nadu ministers and higher officials are busy preparing the memorandum seeking assistance from National Disaster Response Fund for rain related damages.

Heavy rain is lashing coastal districts of Tamil Nadu including Thoothukudi, Cuddalore and many interior districts like Theni and Nilgiris. Torrential rain has resulted in heavy damages worth several crores of rupees. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has till now announced Rs 4 lakh each to the families of more than 130 people killed in rain related incidents.

Flood alert has been issued to nine villages in Kanchipuram district as water is being released from Madurantakam lake. In the district, 3300 people are still in 15 relief camps. Many people have been sent back home as water has receded. Flood alert has been issued in many low lying areas as excess water will be released from Vaigai Dam.

Incessant rain has brought life to a standstill in many places in Theni Thoothukudi and Nellai. In Villupuram tapioca crops have been damaged because of rain water flooding the fields.
