Gujarat State Election Commission has postponed the general elections of municipal corporations, panchayats and local bodies due to present law and order situation in the state. The elections of six municipal corporations, 53 municipalities, 3 newly formed municipalities, 230 taluka panchayats and 31 district panchayats were scheduled to be held by the month end following expiry of present term.

In a statement, State Election Commission has said that the Commission will again review the situation and take decision to hold the elections in next three months.

Earlier, Governor of Gujarat had issued an ordinance to bring uniformity in the law about the situations where local body elections are differed. Our Ahmedabad correspondent reports that the new development is significant in view of sporadic violence incidents in the state due to agitation by Patidar community demanding reservation under the OBC quota.
