Authorities in Guatemala say the death toll from the eruption on Sunday of the Fuego volcano has risen to 65. The country’s disaster agency says smoke from the volcano rose as high as 10 kilometers into the sky and that volcanic ash was confirmed even in the capital Guatemala City, about 40 kilometers away.
The increase in the death toll was reported on Monday, as flows of lava that hit residential areas added to the damage.
More than 3,200 people have been evacuated. A total of 1.7 million people are said to have been affected by the eruption.
Rescue efforts using helicopters are underway mainly in areas engulfed by lava flows. However the operations were suspended due to an eruption on Monday morning.
Officials say the number of casualties is likely to go up as there are still people missing.
