The government will embarrass itself if it does not very soon publish its draft discussion paper on a Common [or Uniform] Civil Code so that stakeholders — women of all religions, reformists, religious heads [I am told several Bishops have praised the government and Mr Modi in particular for taking the initiative], community social leaders, child rights, LGBT communities — can present their points of view.
There is also need for discussion on taxation laws, Scheduled Caste affirmative action provisions under Article 341 iii, visa regulations, and many more which may have religious bias, or be discriminatory in nature. Without such a draft discussion paper, there can only be polemics and confrontational rhetoric by various groups.
And by the way, it will be good if they also read the full text of the Goa code. It may surprise many.
Interstingly People want Uniform or Common Civil Code, but oppose annihilation of caste, marriage tyranny and end of patriarchy and racial purity fixation in their own kingdoms.
But the really funny are those who say india will become a developed nation if the UCC / CCC is operational. The sane stand in solidarity with a just, rule of law and equal opportunity India. from fb
