Gold, silver prices decline as firm dollar, US yields weigh on bullion
Gold and silver prices remained under pressure in Indian markets on Tuesday, September 15, as a stronger US dollar and rising Treasury yields reduced the appeal of non-yielding precious metals. Investors also remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s policy decision, with markets expecting a 25-basis-point rate hike.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), October gold futures fell 0.33% to Rs 1,50,736 per 10 grams, after moving between an intraday low of Rs 1,50,650 and a high of Rs 1,51,553. December silver futures declined 0.64% to Rs 2,31,202 per kg, with the contract trading in a range of Rs 2,30,816-Rs 2,32,546.
The weakness followed a sharper decline in bullion prices during the previous session, when MCX gold and silver fell as much as 2% amid growing expectations of tighter US monetary policy.
Internationally, spot gold slipped around 0.1% to $4,293.29 an ounce, while US gold futures declined 0.4% to $4,332.80. Analysts attributed the pressure largely to higher US Treasury yields and a firmer dollar.
The rise in crude oil prices has also complicated the outlook. Brent crude remained above $107 a barrel, raising concerns that energy-driven inflation could encourage the Federal Reserve to maintain a tighter policy stance.
