At least four people died and several others injured in a police firing at Tawang police station in Arunachal Pradesh, today. The incident happened when supporter of Lama Lobsang Gyatso, who was in police custody, gheraoed Tawang police station and situation went out of control. The mob also tried to burn down the police station.

It has been reported that Lama Lobsang Gyatso, an anti-dam activist, was arrested on April 28 evening following his remarks on the nationality of the Abbot of the Tawang Monastery Guru Tulku Rimpoche. He was later released after the incident.

Lobsang Gyatso is the General Secretary of the Save Mon Region Federation and has been opposing construction dams in the region. Sources that Guru Tulku Rimpoche has been campaigning for the hydro power projects in Tawang, as a result of which Gyatso questioned his nationality and asked him to stay away from politics.
