Former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, passed away in New Delhi today after a prolonged illness. He was 93.

He breathed his last at a private hospital.

Narayan Dutt Tiwari served thrice as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and once Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

He also served as Union Minister for External Affairs, Finance, Petroleum and Commerce and Industry. He also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat has expressed grief over his death.

A political heavyweight once, Mr Tiwari was even considered a potential candidate to be Prime Minister in the early 1990s. He quit the Congress in 1994 and launched his own party the Congress (Tiwari) along with another prominent Congressman Arjun Singh, but they later returned when Sonia Gandhi took over as Congress president.
