Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ramvilas Paswan today assured the nation that there was enough stock of foodgrains to meet the requirement for this year despite drought situation in some states.
Talking to media persons in Jaipur, he said that nearly 600 lakh tonne of food grains are available against the requirement of 549 in the country.
The minister said, the Food Corporation of India is also creating a buffer stock of pulses under which a stock of 2 lakh tonne will be available. He said that the Centre has asked the state governments to check hoarding and to inform the centre about the requirement of pulses. He said that the production of pulses is likely to be around 170 lakh tonne this year.
The Minister said Food Security Act will be implemented throughout the country within three months. He said Hall Marking will be made mandatory for jewellery, and jewellers will have to mention carats and manufacturing signature on jewellery. The Minister said standards should be set for drinking water also.
