Delhi University Will Soon Be Among the World’s Top 100 Universities: Prof. Sudhir Singh

The reappointment of Prof. Yogesh Singh as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (DU) for a second consecutive full term has been welcomed by members of the Delhi University Progressive Teachers’ Association (DUPTA), who described the decision as a historic milestone in the institution’s century-long history.
According to the association, this is the first time since the University’s establishment that a Vice-Chancellor has been entrusted with two consecutive full terms, reflecting confidence in Prof. Singh’s leadership and vision for higher education.
The views were expressed during an online meeting of DUPTA chaired by Prof. Satyapal Singh, Senior Professor of Sanskrit, who joined the session from Mauritius. In his presidential address, he said the Government of India’s decision demonstrates its commitment to recognizing merit, integrity and visionary academic leadership. He added that under Prof. Yogesh Singh’s stewardship, Delhi University has strengthened its academic standing and earned greater national and international recognition.
Speaking at the meeting, Prof. Sudhir Kumar Singh, General Secretary of DUPTA and Professor in the Department of Political Science, said the University had made significant strides in academics, administration and infrastructure over the past five years. He noted that nearly 6,000 faculty members were recruited through a transparent and merit-based process, while administrative reforms, infrastructure expansion and a disciplined work culture contributed to a substantial improvement of nearly 200 places in global university rankings.
Expressing confidence in the Vice-Chancellor’s second term, Prof. Sudhir Singh said Prof. Yogesh Singh’s understanding of the University’s challenges and opportunities would help transform Delhi University into one of the world’s top 100 universities within the next five years. He also observed that the University maintained a stable academic environment throughout the first term, without any major disruptions to campus functioning.
Prof. B.K. Singh, Vice-President of DUPTA and Professor in the Department of Chemistry, described the reappointment as an encouraging message for the academic community, saying it reinforces the value placed on honesty, dedication and excellence in institutional leadership.
Echoing similar sentiments, Prof. Chandramohan Negi of the South Campus said the unprecedented second consecutive term reflects confidence in Prof. Yogesh Singh’s impartial, committed and development-oriented approach to governance.
The speakers also highlighted the Vice-Chancellor’s academic credentials. Prof. Yogesh Singh holds an M.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering. A noted scholar in Software Engineering, he has supervised 23 doctoral researchers, published more than 250 research papers in national and international journals, and authored or co-authored several books, including a work on Software Testing. Over the years, he has served in several key academic and administrative positions.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Dr. Rupesh Chauhan of Kirori Mal College expressed optimism that Prof. Yogesh Singh’s second tenure would usher in a new chapter of growth and academic excellence for Delhi University.
The virtual meeting was attended by a large number of Delhi University teachers who joined from different parts of India and overseas.
