The death toll in the Malad hooch tragedy in Mumbai has reached to 94 even as 45 people are still in hospitals. Excise Department suspended four of its officials in connection with the incident. According to Mumbai Police spokesman Dhanajay Kulkarni, 34 people are undergoing treatment at eight different hospitals across the city. Police have already arrested five accused in the case but prime accused Mainka Bai is still on the run. Eight personnel attached to Malwani police station have been suspended after the incident.
Meanwhile, Congress has alleged that BJP-led Maharashtra government is protecting illicit liqour business. State Congress chief and former Chief Minister Ashok Chavan at a press conference in Mumbai said that illicit businesses have protection of the state government and hence such incident has taken place. He claimed that Police and Excise Department officials turn a blind eye to illicit liquor trade. Demanding a thorough probe into this matter Mr. Chavan said that merely the action against junior officials will not help but the kingpins of these trades should be ferreted out.
