A large cache of arms and explosives were seized during the raid at Gurung’s house at Patlebus area of the hill city today. A school and hostel situated near Gurung’s residence were also raided. Raids were also conducted in other parts of the district.
Clashes broke out between protesters and security forces following raids at Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, GJM, leader Bimal Gurung’s house and GJM office.
A GJM leader, Karuna Gurung has also been arrested from Kurseong.
Situation turned violent following the raids as agitators started pelting stones and set police vans on fire. Police resorted to lathi charge and tear gas.
Amid escalating tension in the hills, GJM has called for an indefinite shutdown in protest against the police raid at their office.
