Legendary actor, director, and producer Mohanlal has been chosen for the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023, the highest honour in Indian cinema. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced the decision, based on the recommendation of the award’s selection committee, recognising Mohanlal’s remarkable and lasting contribution to Indian cinema.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated the Malayalam superstar, noting that his work, rooted in Kerala yet embraced worldwide, has showcased India’s culture and amplified its aspirations. He said Mohanlal’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of creative talent.
Starting his career at a young age, Mohanlal has acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films, earning acclaim for his versatility and depth. Over the decades, he has set a golden benchmark in Indian film history with his dedication and artistry.
The actor has earlier been honoured with the Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2019). As a producer, his film Vanaprastham won the National Award for Best Feature Film.
The 71st National Film Awards ceremony, scheduled for September 23 in New Delhi, will formally confer the honour. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, instituted by the Government of India, recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Indian cinema.
